Of Mice and Men Essay
Everyone in the world is lonely. It may seem that people are not lonely but in reality, each person has some form of loneliness. In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck believes that everyone is lonely in some way or form. This is shown through Curley’s wife, George, and Crooks.
Curley’s wife tries to talk to people because she is really lonely. As she enters the barn, she talks to lennie, “listen” … “All the guys got a horseshoe tenement goin’ on… Why can’t I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely”(page 86). This shows that Curley’s wife is trying to find people to talk to because Curley will not talk to her. This alsos suggests that she fancies lennie because of how vulnerable Lennie is. As she enters Crooks room, “her face was heavily made up. Her lips were slightly parted. She breathed strongly, as though she had been running …”, “They left all the weak ones here,” … “Think I don’t’ know where they went? Even Curley. I know where they all went”(page 77). She tries to start something all day, everyday. Most of the workers at the farm do not pay attention to her because she is “jailbait”. Overall, Curley’s wife feels lonely because her husband does not give her enough attention and that she usually has no one to talk to.
Although he does not seem lonely on the outside, George is lonely on the inside in some way or form. As Lennie kept asking for ketchup, George snapped and ranted, “she jerks back and you
hold her like a mouse. She yells and we got to hide in a irrigation ditch all day with guys looking for us,… All the time somethin’ like that- all the time”(page 11). Lennie always gives George a hard time because he gets into trouble a lot. George has to came for Lennie while he does not have someone to care for him back. On page 7, George frustratedly says, “god, you’re a lot of trouble,”… “I could get along so easy and so nice if I didn’t have…
